Guide to cross from El Salvador to Nicaragua, passing through Honduras. 3 countries in a single day.
border crossing El Salvador Honduras Nicaragua was definitely a long day. We had to cross 3 countries in a single day. We needed to leave El Cuco in El Salvador and arrive in León in Nicaragua.
1- We got up then at 6:00 am and we asked for a ride from La Tortuga Verde to the village in El Cuco. The buses leave every hour, starting at 7:00 am, El Cuco to the San Miguel terminal. This bus was a complete chaos. There were too many people and the worst thing is that the driver and his helpers did not care about anything. They just wanted to set as many people as posible in that bus. It was a bit uncomfortable. However, we were already used to ride on chicken buses so we tried to enjoy and laugh a bit with that situation. (1:30 hour aprox. El Cuco – San Miguel)
2- We arrived at the terminal of San Miguel and we looked for the bus that left for the Amantillo. Many buses stop in Santa Rosa de Lima (El Salvador) for a couple of minutes, others continue straight to the border. (2 hours aprox. San Miguel – El Amantillo)
3- The bus left us exactly at the border where we could do our paperwork in the migration office, then crossed a bridge and we were already in Honduran land.
4- From this border is very easy to get a small group of people so you can go directly from El Amantillo (Honduras) to the bus terminal in Guasuale (Nicaragua). You can also go by bus but the price is very similar and it is more comfortable if you take el colectivo. This group usually stops in Choluteca (Honduras) where many people decide to go down to El Canoto del Somoto (Nicaragua). (3 hours aprox El Amantillo – Guasuale).
5 – When your group reaches the border between Honduras and Nicaragua in Guasuale, you will be attacked by many people on bicycles eager to help you cross the border arguing that this is very far. Believe them. It’s a bit far. At least 1.5 km, but walking and with the bags it might take longer, they do not charge anything, only tips. We decided to go with them and cross the border by bicycle. It was even fun after all the stress we had on the trip so far. Already at that time we were in Nicaraguan lands and happy to start a new adventure in a new country

6- From Guasuale, take the buses to Chinandega. The last bus leaving for Leon was at 4:00 pm. We arrived a little bit late and had to ask a small group to take us directly and without stopping to Chinandega (Nicaragua). (Approx 1.5 hours)
7- Once being in the terminal of Chinandega we take our so desired last bus to Leon. (Approx 2 hours)
It was a busy day 5 buses, 3 buses, 1 pick up, 1 bike and a taxi were part of our itinerary. We arrived really tired.
The same trip can be done directly with a shuttle that you can hire in El Cuco – El Salvador with many of the hostels but the price is much higher and you miss the experience of sharing with locals. We were prepared psychologically for this day and were very happy that we had no major problems and pretty much everything went as planned. Anyway, this border crossing El Salvador Honduras Nicaragua was one of those days on our trip that we gladly remember.
